Thanks for your reply, Stephen. You're absolutely right, in the end of the day, it's really a wait-and-see approach. Other than in the interests of nationality, it remains to see if one of the big companies will buy Autonomy for the sake of market share or otherwise. The market for content management, and EDD is huge and I am sure a lot of the big companies would like a piece of it.

Another interesting article: http://bmoc.wordpress.com/tag/autonomy/

Thanks for writing. Let me answer "Will the MSFT FAST deal be the undoing of Autonomy?" No. Autonomy positions itself as a search company, but it is deriving more and more revenues from other services; e.g., Zantaz services. Next, "Will Autonomy be acquired?" There may be issues with an acquisition. Some governments want to protect certain technologies. Will the UK act to keep Autonomy British? I don't know. I have heard that MSFT and Oracle have "looked at" Autonomy but no deal emerged. Perhaps there are factors operating unknown to me. Will Autonomy be more attractive under different management? Again, I don't know. The value of Autonomy is a combination of its customer list and its annuity revenue, so someone wanting customers might find Autonomy attractive. Too many variables for me to say much more than "Let's wait and see what happens." Stephen Arnold, March 13, 2008, 11 38 Eastern

Hi Stephen,

Interesting to read your article. I have a few questions and that is, do you speculate or believe that the Microsoft-Fast merger will be the beginning of Autonomy's undoing and that ultimately Autonomy won't be able to hold it's own anymore and would need to be acquired by another company? Your argument clearly points in this direction. But, why would a big company wait for this to happen to acquire Autonomy? Autonomy has been a leader in enterprise search for at least the last 2 years, and these companies had plenty of time to make an acquisition.
