Hmm it appears like your site ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I wrote and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. These hard limits on numbers of documents are usually due to 32-bit variables…thus it seems odd that Coveo doesn’t say it copes with 2 to the power 32, i.e. just over 4 billion items. Of course, you’ve also got to assume linear scalability in terms of indexing performance, memory requirements etc. which is harder than it sounds.

None of this is particularly difficult really – the Xapian open source engine coped with half a billion web pages eight years ago, running on around 30 servers, and could easily cope with a few billion now – in fact, with a single code change it could manage 2 to the power 64, which should be enough for a while!
