Coveo Adds Muscle to Its Email Search System

September 9, 2009

Short honk: My Overflight service alerted me to Coveo’s most recent boost to its enterprise email search system. You can read the full text of the article in “Coveo Launches New Email Search Paradigm with Cross Enterprise Email Search”. For me the most interesting comment in the write up was:

Traditional email search enables only the employee to access his or her desktop email, reducing knowledge sharing and creating roadblocks to information access. Coveo`s industry-first Enterprise Email Search package provides organizations with the cross-organizational ability to index, tag, categorize and securely access all enterprise email content to reduce risk and conduct investigations and provide completely unified access to email and attachments regardless of where they are stored, offline within PST files on desktops or laptops, or online within active Exchange or email archiving platforms such as Symantec Enterprise Vault and Quest Archive Manager.

For a full discussion of the new system, navigate to the Coveo Web site.

“Traditional email search enables only the employee to access his or her desktop email” – really? Surely server-side indexing of email repositories has been around for a while? It sounds like Coveo are comparing their new service to a desktop search tool, which is hardly fair.

Charlie, Thanks for pointing out something that we should clarify. The industry first in Coveo’s email offering is that it unifies email search – providing access to email and attachments from desktop systems (local PSTs- even if the systems they reside on are offline), Exchange Server, Lotus Notes, hosted email solutions, Quest Archive, Symantec Enterprise Vault, etc… that can be searched using a single query. In fact, it’s not traditional desktop or enterprise search, but rather a “best-of-both-worlds” combination. Because Coveo creates a centralized, server-based index of both enterprise server-based content and local desktop content (which would traditionally reside only in a local desktop index) employees can search for emails that are in personal archives (like PSTs) on their desktop or laptop, even when their PC is offline, using a mobile phone or the Web UI. They may also have permission-based access to emails of colleagues (that have been tagged for sharing) as well as those of former colleagues. I hope this explanation helps.

Ah – so you index local PSTs and add the contents of these to the server-side indexes, fair enough.
