NASA Launches Semantic Search Initiative
April 24, 2010
NASA CTO Chris Kemp has been busy with some new projects, and one in specific will allow employees to search more than 50 years of data related to the manned space-flight program. The solution? Semantic search, powered by Semaphore, a software suite from the U.K.-based Smartlogic . “NASA Explores Semantic Search” says Semaphore will help “organize documentation on its manned space program according to current data classification standards.” Semaphore’s power is its semantic search algorithms, allowing it to “parse each sentence and extract its meaning,” rather than simple text-matching, which provides insight into the meaning of words and phrases. This powerful form of search is slowly being rolled into web searches by Microsoft and Google. NASA in particular is running a Google Search Appliance to power Semaphore, totally customized to their needs.
