Google Search Appliance or MSFT Fast Search Server?

Great question.

Google or Fast Search? The Real Story Group is consultant and marketing group that reviews technology and offers advice. Adriaan Bloem recently wrote a piece titled, “Adding Google to SharePoint.”

The idea of the story says that adding Google search boxes to SharePoint is a waste of resources. Users are reassured by the Google logo, but the multi-colored letters doesn’t guarantee a better search.

The reader would think Bloem would suggest sticking with the Microsoft supported FAST Search, but he states that is not the best option either.

He mentions the FAST add-on is even “overkill.” His best advice is that if SharePoint isn’t working adequately the problem lies with you, not the program. He suggests that you re-evaluate what you need SharePoint for and fix the problem from within.

But keep in mind that there are alternatives to technical complex solutions like FAST. SharePoint and SurfRay’s Ontolica product are the perfect combination. For more information about Surfray, visit www.surfray.com.

There are open source alternatives as well: and I suspect this year there will be more of them.
