SharePoint: Related Searches at Last

March 10, 2011

Searching in SharePoint can be such a bear.  “Adding Related Searches in SharePoint 2010 Search” outlines how to set up SharePoint to suggest new keywords to users based on their previous search.

The article states:

“By default, the list of related searches will be populated the same way query suggestions get populated – when users click 6 or more times on the search result from the search keyword they searched for.”

There are directions for your Admin to set up and test this useful function.

Of course, there are easier and smoother ways to achieve better search results in SharePoint.  Ontolica from SurfRay provides search suggestions, related searches, and other tools to help you quickly locate the information you need on SharePoint, without any programming. And by leveraging the Ontolica Cube to filter out suggestions and queries that are not relevant to a specific user, or a specific search context. Take a look at how Ontolica can improve the end-user search experience in SharePoint at this link.

Wow, it would be so easy to game this. You and five friends click on the same link and pow! it is recommended to the whole company. Remember when the Google search for “evil empire” had Microsoft as the first hit?

Plenty of fun on an intranet, but imagine how bad this would be on your public search.

This is right up there with locking an account after three bad passwords, which means I can lock your account only knowing your username.

This is an embarrassingly lame and naive algorithm.
