In this case, we hope you are not in the Top 10 since this is the “Top 10 Mistakes Made by SharePoint 2010 Administrators.” The article focuses on technical issues rather than a holistic view. The list is in no particular order. We wanted to highlight some of the ore interesting anecdotes. Please, read the original post to get the full impact of this interesting collection of case examples. but starts with the most controversial.
- Not having “SharePoint in your job title. The idea is that many people responsible for SharePoint just take on SharePoint without having some training and possibly some additional staff. SharePoint can require specialized expertise.
- Creating too many Web applications. The article suggests that you should never have more than four. The actual number may vary, but the point is that complexity becomes an issue with too many applications.
- Making changes in IIS manually. We think this is an important point. The general rule is if it is available in Central Admin, don’t change it in IIS.
- Failing to use the SharePoint solutions framework. If a developer provides a number of files that aren’t in a SharePoint solutions package, we agree that one should not deploy these files to SharePoint servers. Necessary changes should be made via code.
- Inadvertently installing a standalone server. The default options in Microsoft SharePoint installer invites a standalone server. Avoid these because standalone servers make scalability a challenge.
We hope that this list provides some useful guidance to avoid potential SharePoint problems. SurfRay’s engineers understand how much SharePoint can add to an Administrator’s workload. Check the SurfRay Web site for a range of tools and useful input from our development and product team for more.
