October 21, 2011
An unusual trend has struck some firms relying on SharePoint. Numerous companies are abandoning projects due to a lack of available talent, poor SharePoint outcomes hare occurring regularly, and the attrition rate is growing steadily. In a post on CleverWorkarounds, Paul Culmsee shares some thoughts on what he calls, “SharePoint Fatigue Syndrome.”
I’ve reflected on the various reasons I have come to the conclusion that SharePoint is just plain tiring. As a result, people are burning themselves out…Burnout, in case you are not aware, is actually a lack of emotional attachment to what you are doing.
Culmsee blames this so-called SharePoint burnout on seven different factors: cost pressure leading to overwork, structures that force an inappropriate problem solving paradigm, technical complexity, pace of change, SharePoint Entropy, social complexity, and meaning over motivation.
The problem is that this “fatigue” is an issue that must be watch. Is there such a thing as too much SharePoint? Yes, but efficient planning will help.
According to the article, “How Are Businesses Using SharePoint? New Survey Results – Application, Platform, or Appform?” on EndUserSharePoint.com, there are solutions and opportunities to grow. We learn:
During his presentation at SharePoint Conference 2011, Forrester analyst Rob Koplowitz commented that organizations must organize better to capitalize more upon SharePoint. Rob explained that those people employing SharePoint as an application would see lower rankings in its overall importance to their organizations. This is contrasted to firms employing SharePoint as a platform, who are reaping the strongest value and being recognized for its strong value in the enterprise.
The article also states that in a recent survey, “How Are Businesses Using SharePoint?,” the biggest challenges voiced were end user adoption and training. Another important finding was that another concern was the lack of or limited business strategy around SharePoint. Without a clearly defined business strategy or effective user training, the long-term benefits of SharePoint will definitely be called into question.
