There is a presentation “Kicking the Bukkit: Anatomy of an Open Source Meltdown” by Ryan Michela, a developer with experience in open source. Over several years, a game open source project rose and fell. I am not too interested in open source games. At the end of the Slideshare document, there are five reasons an open source game project failed.
Let me summarize these and encourage you to work through he full 55 slide deck. How many of these issues may have an impact on open source search systems. Keep in mind that commercial enterprises like Attivio and IBM make use of open source technology.
- Inclusion of decompiled code in an open source project
- License issues
- Ties ups within the community before a project gains momentum
- No contributor license agreement
- Disgruntled developers in the community.
The presentation includes a quote that I noted:
It only takes one unhappy developer to kill an unprotected project.
Is there an open source search company vulnerable to one or more of these issues? I can name a couple. I wonder if the firm’s funding sources are concerned about their investment “kicking the bucket”?

1. is just crazy, open source or closed source. It’s not a sensible way to code.
2. Choosing a license carefully is important. Apache Lucene/Solr and Elasticsearch both use the well-known and flexible Apache 2 license, which also allows for embedding within other projects (including closed source ones).
3. This is a community management issue, common to all projects.
4. Apache Lucene/Solr uses the Apache model. Elasticsearch has its own contributor agreement http://www.elasticsearch.org/contributing-to-elasticsearch/ – the general point is that whatever is contributed must be able to be distributed without restriction.
5. See 3. above. Lucene/Solr uses the standard Apache model of a Project Management Committee and named committers, who work for a wide range of different organisations. It seems to work pretty well on the whole. Elasticsearch is a little more top-down with a small number of core committers (most if not all are employed by Elasticsearch the company) deciding what gets committed.
You’re right though, every open source project is vulnerable to disagreements within the community, which is why we occasionally see codebase forking, long and tedious discussion threads and even the occasional lawsuit. Of course the benefit is that this is all happening in the open in a transparent fashion, so a potential user of the technology can make a judgement on the risks and rewards of adopting open source. If it were closed source, this wouldn’t be possible – you just have to have faith that the company controlling the software will act in a sensible manner come what may – acquisitions, change of control, change of the market or a sudden need to buy the CEO a new yacht – and I think recent history has shown that this leap of faith is not always a good idea.
