Amazon and Its eBook Bonanza

April 1, 2010

Short honk: Gigaom’s “iPad or Not, Amazon Will Still Make a $1 Billions [sic] from eBooks” caught my attention Amazon is a pretty secretive outfit. The source of the number is an analyst report from JP Morgan. Is this public relations or a bold revelation designed to make clear how far ahead of Apple Amazon is? My hunch is that this is PR designed to give Amazon a shot of that Apple juice that is fueling Apple’s share price. Maybe the economy is recovering. The “E” is not for effort; the “E” is for estimated.

Stunning assertion that ebooks will make up 25% of the book market and that Amazon will capture 30% of the 25 times increase in the size of the ebook market.
I don’t see a time frame listed for the future scenario but it will never happen. Not now not in 5 years not in 10 years. The book industry is not a monolith, and cook books make up more that 8%. Recipes will go e but not as kindle editions. The same is true for many subsections of the 24 billion total book industry. Annalists need to parse their numbers more carefully. This is like saying the housing market is going up so mortgage backed securities are a safe bet.
