Concept Searching Does Social Media

December 20, 2012

I wanted to snag this before it slipped through the goose’s Web feet. Concept Searching has beefed up its social media presence. The company’s persona is Cate Evans, a marketing manager. The persona posted this question, “How many times can I pick the wrong search results?” My answer is, “Every time.” Search requires that the user know what he or she is looking for. If the user is clueless, guessing what combination of terms or which misunderstood link is the “right one” is a trial-and-error affair. The less clever the searcher, the more clicking required. A mouse click and reading without comprehension do not a good searcher make. That’s why library schools work so hard on reference interviews, pre-research, and the use of commercial database systems. LinkedIn is more of a job hunting service in my opinion unless one is lucky enough to have a LinkedIn expert toot a company’s horn. If you want to track Concept Searching’s persona, I noticed it in the subgroup “Information Access and Search Professionals.” If you have an answer to this Concept Searching question, head on over and share your wisdom.

More Funding for DataSift Means More Offerings

December 20, 2012

Technology focused on analytics for the social realm picks up speed. Tech.Huanqiu.com reported on more venture capital funding going towards DataSift. The article “Social Data Analysis Company DataSift $15 Financing” reveals the details on the funding given to this firm specializing in helping developers and third-party access to Twitter, Facebook and other sites.

This technology uses natural language processing techniques and is therefore not solely limited to search function keywords. Their most unique functionality involves their many filters that can sort information according to a variety of factors.

The article discusses how DataSift’s 300 corporate customers, but:

“[C]ompared with 200 a quarter has improved, including Fortune 500 companies, also including social technology companies, news agencies, consulting firms and government agencies. DataSift also recently released a variety of new services to facilitate corporate social data analysis and commercial data integration. This service and business intelligence applications, databases, data warehousing platform and other cloud computing services complement each other, including Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon S3, MongoDB, CouchDB, FTP / SFTP, ElasticSearch and WebHooks.”

When DataSift gets more money, they will have even more ability to support more services. Not that the current list has that many shortcomings.

Liferay Ventures into Social Media

December 19, 2012

Liferay is a business built around an open source portal, and has been receiving a good deal of positive press lately. EContent covers the latest news regarding Liferay in its story, “Liferay Announces New Social Collaboration App for the Enterprise.”

The article begins with the announcement of Social Office 2.0”

“Liferay, Inc., provider of an enterprise-class, open source portal, announced the launch of Social Office 2.0 Enterprise Edition (EE), the newest version of Liferay’s social collaboration solution for enterprise teams. Social Office 2.0 EE, the newest app available in Liferay Marketplace, equips users with a means to collaborate with teams in their business units and to build a social network within their enterprise.”

Liferay is definitely doing something exciting by providing the open source community social networking options. However, for users who have a more urgent business need for their enterprise open source software, a company like LucidWorks might be a good option. Compared to Liferay’s portal, LucidWorks supports the open source community by offering free distributions of Apache Lucene and Solr, as well as solid customer training and support. In addition, customers who need out-of-the-box solutions will benefit from products like LucidWorks Search or LucidWorks Big Data. These offering are customizable, but don’t demand high-level developer support for implementation.

Big Data plus European Football Equals Beautiful

December 17, 2012

Of course there is a reason for real-time UK football analysis companies to exist. With the amount of money fueled into this industry and the huge amount of buzz games and predictions draw, it would be silly for a company like Squawka not to be here. The Guardian delves into how this company works in the article, “How Does Big Data Add to the Experience of Watching Football?”

Social analytics expert, DataSift is also on board. On October 28, they tracked over 380,000 Tweets and gained insight on sentiment during the game where Chelsea lost to Manchester United.

The article quotes Squawka’s co-founder and CEO:

“There are so many ways we can use this sort of data, and we’re certainly planning to do more in this area. For example, does a bit of ultimately unnecessary skill boost online reaction more than a simple yet effective pass? Do foreign players get more abuse for diving than their English counterparts? It’s all in the data.”

Squawka will be adding services for cricket and formula one racing due to their success with European football. We find this usage of big data absolutely fascinating and completely beautiful. It is a creative way of adding even more to already amazing games.

X1 Discovery and NW3C Offer Social Discovery Class

December 13, 2012

We’ve made a discovery regarding eDiscovery. The National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) has teamed up with X1 Discovery to offer some social media eDiscovery training. So far, their “X1SD Class List” is quite short, with one low-profile event scheduled to be held in Dec 2012 in New York City. The class description reads:

“This course provides ‘hands-on’ training designed specifically to address the needs of social media investigators. Participants will develop the practical skills, insights, and knowledge necessary to successfully gather data from Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedln in a manner and form conducive to an investigation, whether that investigation is civil or criminal in nature.
“X1 Social Discovery Training will:

  • Familiarize students with Facebook, Twitter and Linkedln;
  • Teach Students how to use X1 Discovery to address social media content and information:
  • Teach Students how to collect and authenticate information relevant to their investigations;
  • Teach Students how to prepare reports; and
  • Provide the students with practical exercises to enhance their skills.”

A central resource for state and local agencies fighting economic and high-tech crime, NW3C began in 1978 as the Leviticus Project, and was originally devoted to a specific multi-state investigation. In 1991, its mission was expanded to providing training, maintaining databases, and providing analytical services to agencies in all 50 states. Renamed the following year, the Center has vastly expanded its membership throughout the U.S. and into fifteen other countries.

Not surprisingly, X1 Discovery focuses on eDiscovery, with a current emphasis on social media and cloud-based data. The company designs its eDiscovery and enterprise search solutions specifically for IT and legal professionals. Originally founded by Idealab in 2011, X1 is based in Pasadena, California.

PolySpot Adds In Connector to Social Technology Giant Blue Kiwi

November 28, 2012

Productivity is the name of the game for enterprise infrastructure software vendor PolySpot. Now, they have added in another connector to their list spanning over 100. The article “The Blue Kiwi Connector for PolySpot is Ready!” tells us more about this forward-thinking move.

Since BlueKiwi is Europe’s largest cloud based enterprise social software solution, it was a no-brainer for PolySpot to develop a connector and add it to their library.

The author states in his post on the subject:

“But beyond collaboration and co-creation, what good is creating, or co-creating information if the fruit of the collective intelligence of employees can not be quickly found? Thus, to offer the use of our converging technologies, the R&D department at PolySpot has developed a BlueKiwi connector for PolySpot. With BlueKiwi and PolySpot, employees would enjoy a productive environment, strengthening collaborative and social innovation, expertise finding and sharing.”

What is productivity without social? This is the question users do not have to learn the hard way that social technologies do in fact fuel productivity. Thanks to PolySpot’s Information At Work, the social power of BlueKiwi is now a part of the picture.

Collective Intelligence without Real Steele?

November 24, 2012

I just read “The Emerging Science of ‘Collective Intelligence’ — and the Rise of the Global Brain.” Much of the information was familiar to me. How could an addled goose in rural Kentucky know anything about a “global brain.” As it turns out, the notion of a global brain has been talked about for a number of years. Google spits out a half million hits to the bound phrase “global brain.” I may have overlooked something in the article, but the phrase “global brain” is more closely associated in my mind with the prescient thinker Robert Steele. See for example this short list on Experience Festival. What is interesting to me about Mr. Steele’s approach is that he uses the concept within the intelligence work process. In my context, “intelligence” is not IQ. “Intelligence” is the profession of analyzing information for certain government purposes. I like the academic approach, but I relate to the professional application of the concept due to my interest in findability.

ZyLAB on Mixing Social Media with Business

November 15, 2012

EDiscovery and social media: another tricky content issue. The CodeZED blog offers, “Compliance in the Cloud: How to Deal with Social Media in the Workplace.” Writer Brenda Mahedy succinctly lays out the problem. For example, she writes:

“The combination of business sensitive information and a mass broadcast capacity keeps legal departments awake at night! Have you thought of some of the legal challenges facing the use of social media at the workplace?

  • At this moment there are no specific laws and regulations for the governance of social media.
  • There is no generally recognized right to privacy in social media postings.
  • The effects of publicly available information stretch out beyond the recruitment process and are entering courts.
  • More and more legal cases insist on the production of social media e-discovery as evidence…
  • Social media information lives on servers that are not in the enterprise’s direct custody or control.”

All important points to consider. Despite the title, the article directly offers no actual solutions for dealing with social media in the workplace. Instead, the ZyLAB blog suggests a ZyLAB white paper (registration required), titled “Compliance in the Cloud: How to Deal with Social Media in the Workplace” by Annelore van der Lint. It is probably a good idea to check out the paper if you use, or plan to use, social media in connection with your business. As Mahedy reminds us, research firm Gartner has predicted that, “by the end of 2013 half of all companies will have been asked to product material from social media websites for e-Discovery.”

ZyLAB was founded 1983, with its release of the first full-text retrieval software for the PC. Its current flagship product, the eDiscovery and data management solution ZyLAB Information Management Platform, was released in 2010. The company maintains headquarters in the Netherlands and the United States, and has offices around the world.

Social Content Proves Valuable to Enterprise Search Solutions

November 5, 2012

Enterprise search is a rapidly evolving area of technology in the corporate world and businesses are wise to learn to collect and reconcile related information quickly. As multiple search capabilities evolve across platforms in the enterprise and online, people need to learn how to make use of each specific capability that is available. A recent article on CMSWire titled “Social Reconnects Enterprise Search” tells us of the need to integrate social search into enterprise search technologies.

The article explains the importance of the addition of social context in addition to an existing enterprise search solution:

“Enterprise search can tap into employee profiles, internal networks, other work-related interactions, and systems usage to personalize search and extend context in order to return the most relevant results. Beyond the usual ‘systems of record,’ social networks and activities provide a great deal of contextual information, especially in terms of topics. The composite of all of these attributes can indicate each person’s professional purview and work focus, which can better connect that person to the right information.”

As social content increases in importance to businesses, reliable and secure enterprise search solutions such as those offered by Intrafind will grow in importance to the overall capabilities of organizations. Be sure to harness all of the tools that are available to fully take advantage of the information at your hands.
