Australia Department of Defence Closes Some Windows
February 20, 2009
Is Australia’s highly regarded Department of Defense an odd duck or a spring robin? ComputerWorld Australia’s article “Defence Scraps Vista, Office, Exchange Server Upgrades”. You can read the story here. The article said:
A Defence notice leaked to ComputerWorld and signed by chief technology officer Matt Yannopoulos said Microsoft was scratched out during a review of the department’s information architecture management server, desktop roadmap, and defence approved software list reports. “The CTO has assessed these products and deemed they provide no significant business advantage for Defence,” the notice states. “In addition, implementing these products would require an investment in new and upgraded hardware and the chief information officer group is not in a position to undertake this investment at this time.”
Windows is not aced out. “Upgrades” not a blackball are what’s in play. The GOOG has been doing a good job in Australia. Its mapping and earth programs are hot. The New South Wales deal was a big win. No word about SharePoint search. As budgets get squeezed, will Microsoft be like my mom’s penchant for getting the last dab and then tossing the tube in the trash?
