Google Public Data
May 4, 2009
A happy quack to the reader who alerted me to the fact that Google Public Data at http://www.google.com/publicdata redirects to http://www.google.com. I think this means that after the news announcement on April 28, 2009, there is no Web site for the service. A search for public data on Google returns links to a demo and news stories, but no service. If I am missing something, let me know. Seems to me that Google was too rushed to round out the support needed for its coincidental announcement that neutralized to some degree the Wolfram Alpha announcement.

The idea seems to be that you search “unemployment rate [state]” or “population [state]” in the universal google search window, and, as long as you are in the U.S., you should receive “Public Data” results. Many other types of “Public Data” are said to exist. But since I am outside the U.S., I can not judge as this data is confined to use for U.S. users only – but you and your local readers can see if it works.
Sperky,
The Google Public Data url redirects to Google.com. Perhaps in the rush of coincidences, the service is not fully develope?

But there is no url for this service. The idea that Google Public Data even has a url is disingenuous and was likely begun with TechCrunch talkbacks to Apr 29 story “After Being Upstaged By Google, Wolfram Alpha Fires Back With A Leaked Screenshot”
.
Watch the 51 second video on http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/04/adding-search-power-to-public-data.html
to see how to search for GPD results. 🙂
Am I missing something here?
