Coveo Expresso Breaks New Ground in Information Access

November 9, 2009

Coveo, a leading provider of enterprise search technology and information access solutions, recently unveiled a free, entry-level enterprise search solution, Coveo Expresso™ Beta.  Coveo’s new solution places the power of enterprise information access in the hands of employees everywhere, at no cost, for up to 50 users. The free version of the Expresso content processing system can index one million one million desktop files and email items as well as 100,000 Intranet documents.  Licenses can be expanded at minimal cost to as many as 250 users, five million desktop files and email items, and one  million SharePoint and File share documents, just by typing a new access code. Administrators simply add new email accounts and SharePoint or file share documents within the intuitive administrative interface. Coveo Expresso is available for immediate download at www.coveo.com/expresso.

Laurent Simoneau, President and CEO, told Beyond Search:

Although enterprise search solutions have been available for nearly a decade, most are built on legacy systems that are difficult to implement and have not lived up to the promise of intuitive, secure and comprehensive information access across information silos. We want to re-educate businesses about the ease and simplicity with which enterprise search should work, as our customers can attest. Coveo Expresso does that—and takes enterprise search one step further with ubiquitous access interfaces such as the Coveo Outlook Sidebar or the desktop floating search bar, which provide guided, faceted search where employees ‘live’—in their email interface or on their PC/laptop. We’ve been testing this feature for a number of months with our current customers and have found it to be one of the biggest boosts to productivity for all employees, regardless of their roles.

Features

The free download features a number of Coveo innovations, including:

  • Cross-enterprise Email Search, for 50 email accounts, including PST files and attachments, on desktops and in servers for up to 1 million total items.
  • The Coveo Outlook Sidebar, the industry’s first true enterprise search Outlook plug-in, which provides sophisticated features such as conversation folding, related conversations, related people, related attachments, and the ability to search any indexed content without leaving Outlook, as well as the ability to launch advanced search with guided navigation through search facets.
  • The Coveo Desktop Floating Search bar, enabling guided searches without leaving the program in which the user is working.
  • Enterprise Desktop Search, including always-on indexing for 50 PCs/laptops.
  • Mobile access via BlackBerries for 50 users.

The Espresso Interface

Search results appear in a clean, well-organized panel display.

Outlook and Email Integration

Users of an email system like Outlook have Espresso available within the application. An intuitive Outlook sidebar provides instant email search, along with related email threads, contacts, attachments and the ability to easily expand your search beyond email.

And, the Coveo system implements a “floating tool bar.” The user at any point in time can access the Express system. Moving the mouse cursor to the top of screen displays a floating tool bar.

Administration

Coveo has made administration quick and easy. The company has learned from its work with telephone companies ways to reduce the amount of time required to set up and manage security, services, and features.

Expresso also includes useful reports. These dashboards make it possible to monitor certain system and user conditions. Shown below is the report of usage and capacity, among other system functions.

Platform

Express is built on the Coveo Enterprise Search 6.0 platform, and includes a simplified Admin Portal that allows the IT administrator to centrally provision users with one click. The employee can then install or update Coveo Express to his or her desktop, Outlook and BlackBerry – with one click.

Richard Tessier, Coveo’s senior vice president of products said:

Coveo Express will act as a generator and incubator for new features and functionalities. The product includes advanced functionality that many other enterprise search solutions do not offer.  We want the IT community to download Express, provision it to their users, and tell us what they think about how Express works, and how enterprise search can make their lives easier. IT managers can download Coveo Express and have it running in less than an hour, without requiring help from consultants or even Coveo services. Three clicks and they’re finished.

The Expresso product is based on the Coveo Enterprise Search platform version 6.0, can be expanded to provide secure connectivity and unified information access into additional enterprise content, directly from PCs/Laptops, Microsoft Outlook or  BlackBerry Smartphone. Among the most popular content sources: Symantec Enterprise Vault, Quest Archive Manager and Lotus Notes for email and email archives, Salesforce.com and Siebel for CRM, OpenText or Documentum for document management, Confluence and Jive wikis, databases and other enterprise systems content, and even voice indexes within multimedia files.

Expresso makes use of Coveo’s Advanced Search Modules, which are highly configurable and scalable to billions of documents. Coveo Modules enable companies to choose the connectors and access interfaces that best match their business needs, and can be expanded seamlessly over time. In addition, Coveo has rolled out its Advanced Knowledge Access Solutions. These are highly configurable and scalable to billions of documents but including features specific to business processes and/or segments, such as Customer Service and Call Center Solutions. Coveo Solutions are configured to reflect unique business processes and requirements. Coveo Solutions also include business intelligence dashboards to help executives stay abreast of company KPIs and critical business issues and processes.

The company licenses the Coveo system to more than 600 customers globally, including AmerisourceBergen, CA, Deloitte, GEICO, ESPN, Haley & Aldrich, Lockheed Martin, Odyssey America, P&G, Progress Software, PRTM, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Rabobank, SNC-Lavalin, Spencer Stuart, Theodoor Gilissen Bankiers N.V., and the U.S. Navy.

Coveo plied me with one iced tea and a taco. At that dinner, I received a briefing about the Expresso product. The taco upset my stomach, but I was easily convinced to write about this Coveo product. Quick, alert the Senate Police that I can be reshaped with a lousy taco.
