DarkCyber is a video news program about the Dark Web, cyber crime, and lesser known Internet services. The program for August 11, 2020, covers four stories. This week’s program is available on YouTube at this link. [Note below]

Stephen E Arnold, the producer of DarkCyber, illustrates how to jam Alexa’s surveillance components. When a white noise is not enough, Arnold points to a Web site which sells a wide array of jamming equipment. The video features a diagram of how a jamming device can disrupt mobile signals, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth from a vehicle. If a basic mobile jammer is not suitable, Arnold provides information about a military-grade detection and jamming device with a comprehensive kill chain subsystem. Arnold reminds the viewer that use of some jamming devices can have unexpected consequences.

The second story addresses the TikTok dust up between the US and China. Arnold focuses on the trivializing of the TikTok threat by pundits. These individuals, in Arnold’s opinion, are not assessing the social engineering risks posed by a TikTok-type service. Data from a consumer app can pinpoint an individual who may be susceptible to cash inducements or threats to compromise the security of a workplace. TikTok videos may be silly, but the operators of the services are unlikely to be blind to the value of the data and its utility.

The third story considers iPhone hacking. Software, available via the regular Web, promises to hack an iPhone. If that approach does not work, there are hackers advertising iPhone hacking on the regular Internet. But what if the hack requires more aggressiveness? Arnold provides a link to a Dark Web site which makes clear that its operator will do anything for money. Can the iPhone be hacked? That depends on one’s willingness to believe information published on the Internet.

The final story focuses on the August 2020 Interpol report about cyber crime in the time of Covid. The report is available without charge, and its findings echo those of speakers at the 2020 National Cyber Crime Conference, held in July 2020. Arnold provides the url from which the new report can be downloaded without charge.

I wanted to point out that we will no longer post a copy of the video on Vimeo. That company sent an email demanding that Stephen E Arnold upgrade to a Pro account. Instead of saying, “We are raising prices,” Vimeo threatened Arnold with termination of his account because the free DarkCyber video is a commercial enterprise. Arnold wrote Vimeo twice pointing out that he retired in 2013, produces the video without financial support or sponsorship, and makes the content available to anyone interested in the Dark Web, cybercrime, and lesser known Internet services. Arnold told me,

“Millennial marketers at Vimeo thinks it is doing its job by making false accusations and then ignoring respectful questions about the fee change. Cancel culture to Vimeo, ‘You are history. This is your termination notice.’

We will give Facebook a whirl and include that url if the service allows easy access with a minimum of invasive surveillance, pop ups, and targeted advertising for WhatsApp.

A Smarter Captioning AI

Algorithms have been used to caption images for some time now. However, the results tend to be rather generic and treat images as separate from accompanying text. Tech Xplore reports on “A System to Produce Context-Aware Captions for News Images.” Journalist Ingrid Fadelli writes:

“Alasdair Tran, Alexander Mathews and Lexing Xie at the Australian National University have been trying to develop new systems that can generate more sophisticated and descriptive image captions. In a paper recently pre-published on arXiv, they introduced an automatic captioning system for news images that takes the general context behind an image into account while generating new captions. The goal of their study was to enable the creation of captions that are more detailed and more closely resemble those written by humans. … The three researchers went on to develop and implement the first end-to-end system that can generate captions for news images. The main advantage of end-to-end models is their simplicity. This simplicity ultimately allows the researchers’ model to be linguistically rich and generate real-world knowledge such as the names of people and places.”

Instead of ignoring rare words, the model analyzes them. The team eschewed the typical LTSM architecture for Transformer, a more recent architecture now used by language modeling and machine translation researchers. The shift allows for richer vocabulary and sentence structure. The team also worked to improve their model’s accuracy in identifying individuals in photos. This is particularly useful since, they found, most newspaper images feature people. The curious can check out a demo of the system, titled Transform and Tell.

Fadelli describes the researchers’ hopes for the system’s future:

“Tran, Mathews and Xie would also like to train their model to complete a slightly different task to that tackled in their recent work, namely, that of picking an image that could go well with an article from a large database, based on the article text. Their model’s attention mechanism could also allow it to identify the best place for the image within the text, which could ultimately speed up news publishing processes.”

The team also suggest their system could be used to extrapolate longer passages or summarize related background information. We are curious to see how this technology evolves.

Apple Channels Amazon

DarkCyber noted this Digital Reader article: “Apple Launched a Publishing Portal for Book Authors – And You Don’t Need a Mac to Use It!” The article reports:

Apple still doesn’t care if you want to read an ebook you buy from them on non-Apple hardware, but they have finally launched a publishing portal that anyone can access using a web browser.

The question is, “Why?”

Many years ago, DarkCyber prepared a report for a large and now mostly forgotten electronic database company. The point of the report was that self published books and monographs were likely to increase, dwarfing the hard copy new titles. The curves in the PowerPoint looked like Covid19 cases in New York City.

At that time, the electronic publishing company thought books were not interesting. For years, Apple was happy with putting actual and would be authors on the Apple bus.

Now Apple has changed its corporate mind. Why?

DarkCyber opines that:

  • Amazon is likely to slam the door on epublishing and use one of those allegedly unpickable electronic locks which talk to Alexa. That’s bad, so Apple is changing its policy.
  • Apple wants more money and content. Although the take off was frightening, Apple’s non rich media content offerings are gaining altitude. Books are a useful passenger. Revenue is revenue.
  • Apple is just pulling a Silicon Valley me too. The benefit is that Apple wants to be in the book game. As the hip Silicon Valley person would say, “Books because.”

Whatever the reason, authors have a new channel. What about regular book publishing companies? Yeah, because. Like the online outfit that ignored books, there will be less attractive consequences of not embracing electronic publishing and book-like artifacts.

SEO: Let Us Hustle, Everyone

I was horrified in 2013 when I read “Google Semantic Search: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Techniques That Get Your Company More Traffic, Increase Brand Impact, and Amplify Your Online Presence.” I assume Ramanathan Guha, one of the semantic sparkplugs, may have to breathe deeply and do Zen things when he ponders how his semantic inventions have been applied.

One idea for “semantic” was to deal with ambiguity and provide improved recall for Web content. I am not to thrash around in the Semantic Web kiddy pool with over inflated natural language processing methods, the sprites of SPARQL, and Watson-esque methods that can figure out “meaning” in human utterances. No, no.

I want to point out that crazy suggestions for fooling Google’s bastardized relevance methods into presenting a user with increasingly less and less relevant information. Here’s an example: A query for “Peruvian Machu Picchu stone masonry.” Pretty specific. Here’s what the GOOG delivers:

The top hit is from a travel agency. Number two is a Wikipedia article. Number three is a collection of pictures.

I don’t know about you, but I am not confident in a travel agency’s take on Mesolithic quarrying. The Wikipedia entry raises the question, “Says who?” And the pictures. I don’t need pictures, I need data about quarrying: Where, chemical composition of stone, tools, etc.

But that’s the search engine optimization world at work. Travel agencies are experts because they put a word in their sales material. Notice that the wondrous Google ad matching algorithm did NOT generate explicit travel advertisements. This begs the question,  “What’s the problem, Google smart software ad matching thing?”

The goal of search engine optimization is to outfox an increasingly mixed up Google and the clueless user who wants information on a specific topic; for example, Peruvian Machu Picchu stone masonry,” NOT a pitch for a tours. The sacred valley gateway to Machu Picchu becomes under ham fisted SEO manipulations, the Valley of Tricked Customers, populated with users wondering, “I meant masonry information, not a tour.”

Let’s put David Amerland and his ilk aside. At least, the almost respectable SEO bilkadoodles (a cross between a street savvy fox and pink miniature poodle) write books and contribute to Search Engine Journal, one of the advocates of helping Google display unrelated content.

No, let’s take a quick look at an outfit which is a breed of interest to SEO veterinarians: Woobound.com.

Woobound.com came across my lidar when I received this email on Friday, May 1, 2020. Note that the text is unedited:

I noted several issues which this spam email poked in my face:

  1. The email is signed Christian, but the email address is for jeffrey@woobound.com. A fake name is a flashing yellow light.

  2. The Christian Arriola / Jeffrey entity is following what is a trend in getting useless content in order to pump up a loser blog. (I receive these “please, take my content and link to me” requests frequently. As I was assembling this post, an entity called andreea.sauciuc@cognitiveseo.com begged me to respond to her earlier requests for me to talk to her. No, doesn’t work with these thoughtless, clueless individuals.) The Christian Jeffrey entity called my attention to a story from 2016 about finance, and it seems to Christian Jeffrey that a story related to “seo-financial-advisor” and Manuka Kitchen. The entities are either stupid humans or stupid software bots. The common denominator is “stupid.”
  3. The Christian Arriola / Jeffrey entity is confident that the entity and I agree. Wrong. The fake praise is even more obtuse than the links to subjects of zero interest to me and the DarkCyber team. What’s most inept? Assuming that I am going to agree with this Christian Arriola / Jeffrey or that I will craft a five star review of the Amerland SEO book?

What’s up with this Christian Arriola / Jeffrey entity, please?

Curious I did some checking of open source content. What do you know? The Christian Arriola / Jeffrey reinvented himself in 2018. Here’s a before behavioral modification in the food aisle and the fashion forward Christian Arriola / Jeffrey of the here and now. The image comes from Facebook. Of course, this Christian possibly named Arriola is a Facebooker and an Instagramer to boot:

The “less pizza” diet seems to have had zero impact on the fashion sense of the entity Christian Jeffrey. You can check out the girl friends (numerous), the dog, the favorite cities, and the entity’s most loved pizza restaurants at this link.

A little more exploration revealed a cornucopia of search engine optimization rubbish presented in a series of YouTube videos. You can experience these discharges (effluent, not prison) by clicking on this image:a hustle show

The Christian Jeffrey program does not present the name of the top hustler who operates the program.

Compared to the Poland China output in the Amerland book, the content in these videos might challenge a trippe of hungry pygmy goats.

Let’s look at an example:

The image is similar to those my team has reviewed as part of our work for a tribunal focused on human trafficking and child sex crime.

The program is part of the “show” — now mercifully discontinued — called The Hustle. This particular video features images of hot flames, a visage with what seems to be a Hustle smirk, a VW sedan, footage in a bar, and includes the statement “My life is proving my mom and dad wrong.”

With some trepidation, I asked some of my team to “watch” videos prepared by the Christian Arriola / Jeffrey entity.

Here’s the scorecard I received for three of the eight videos my team viewed. Please, note that each person watched two videos because as one of the DarkCyber team said, “I can’t stand this vlogger and the content. Two’s the limit for me.” I listen, so I said, “Okay, team two shows.”

Programs were rated on a scale of one to 10. One is an F or failure; 10 is a great program with solid content. Here we go:

Show 1: How to Be a Podcaster. Score: 2. Comment: Mostly correct but geared to a person who cannot read. On the Hustle Web site, the link to this program and the free series of which it is allegedly a part does not resolve. Dead links are not what SEO experts report as helpful.

Show 2: Best Keywords for Massage Therapist. Score 1. Comment: Distasteful subject. Seems like a way to build traffic for in call and outcall prostitution services.

Show 3: Make Money with SEMrush. Score 1. Comment: Superficial. Seems to suggest that anyone — even a person with zero education and a questionable reputation — can become a search engine optimization expert.

DarkCyber provided the Christian Arriola / Jeffrey entity with some questions, a routine part of our data collection process. Here are the questions Christian Jeffrey declined to answer:

Would you be kind enough to explain the use of dual names?

One of the team took a gander at the LinkedIn profile associated with one of the names the “Hustle” expert used in his communications to me. Here’s what one of the DarkCyber team learned:

  • One job at the present time: “Associate Director of SEO” for Nexstar Digital. This is a full time position. Engaged for one year.
  • Another job at the present time: “Search Engine Optimization SEO Consultant”. Engaged for nine years.
  • A third job at the present time: Podcast Host and content marketing strategy. Engaged for three years. Note that the video podcast went into what seems to be permanent hiatus “one year ago.”
  • Education: Five years to get a BA degree in “business administration, marketing, and computer information systems.”
  • An entity named Carlos Rosado said, “One of the most complete SEO managers I have ever worked with.”
  • Christian Jeffrey is interested in AT&T and the Hotel Group, among others.

The DarkCyber team member’s opinion based on viewing the Hustle programs and the LinkedIn profile:

The fact that the person Christian Arriola / Jeffrey uses one name for LinkedIn and omits his name from the “Hustle” podcast raises red flags. Also, the information presented in the LinkedIn biography makes clear that this individual presents three “jobs” of which two are his own endeavors. This is another warning light. Multiple gigs are understandable today, but to list one’s own projects as full time jobs leads me to believe that this individual is one with a bit of professional fluidity or “stretch.”

Net Net: SEO is a discipline which plays a cat-and-mouse game with Google. Making a Web page appear when the content of that Web page is not germane to the user’s query is in some ways beyond marketing. The practice edges into intellectual dishonesty. Maybe the behavior is not in the same class as illegal weapons dealing, contraband, human trafficking, and child sex crime? But the facts presented in open source support these conclusions:

  1. SEO practitioners do shade or shape what Google displays.
  2. Individual practitioners may embrace methods associated with criminal behavior; that is, the use of aliases in a professional setting like LinkedIn and email to entities like ArnoldIT.
  3. The expertise required to deliver for fee SEO services may depend on the use of questionable software tools developed by other SEO “experts” and may not work. (Alexa Ranking reports that the Woobound.com site ranks at 7,313,183. DarkCyber finds it peculiar that an SEO expert cannot generate traffic or YouTube views for that matter.)

If you have to decide between the Amerland book’s advice and the “expertise” peddled by Christian Arriola / Jeffrey, look further. You’ll probably save time and money and avoid the “hustle.”

The Online Cohorts: A Potential Blind Sport

In a conversation last week, a teacher told me, “We are not prepared to teach classes online.” I sympathized. What appears trivial to a person who routinely uses a range of technology, a person accustomed to automatic teller machines, a mobile phone, and an Alexa device may be befuddled. Add to the sense of having to learn about procedures, there is the challenge of adopting in person skills to instructing students via a different method; for example, Google Hangouts, Zoom, and other video conferencing services. How is that shift going? There are anecdotal reports that the shift is not going smoothly.

That’s understandable. More data will become available as researchers and hopefully some teachers report the efficacy of the great shift from a high touch classroom to a no touch digital setting.

I noted “Students Often Do Not Question Online Information.” The article provides a summary of research that suggests:

students struggle to critically assess information from the Internet and are often influenced by unreliable sources.

Again, understandable.

The article points out a related issue:

“Having a critical attitude alone is not enough. Instead, Internet users need skills that enable them to distinguish reliable from incorrect and manipulative information. It is therefore particularly important for students to question and critically examine online information so they can build their own knowledge and expertise on reliable information,” stated Zlatkin-Troitschanskaia. [Professor Olga Zlatkin-Troitschanskaia from JGU. The study was carried out as part of the Rhine-Main Universities (RMU) alliance.]

Online is a catalyst. The original compound is traditional classroom teaching methodologies. The new element is online. The result appears to raise the possibility of a loss of certain thinking skills.

Net net: A long period of adaptation may be ahead. The problem of humans who cannot do math or think in a manner that allows certain statements to be classified as bunk and others as not bunk is likely to have a number of downstream consequences.

In short, certain types of thinking and critical analysis may become quite rare. Informed decisions may not be helpful if the information upon which a choice is based operates from a different type of fact base.

Maybe not so good?

Google and Its Warm Relationship with France

We noted the trusted (honest) news story “French Regulator: Google Must Pay French News and Publishing Firms for Using Their Content.” The write up notes in a trusted way:

“Google’s practices caused a serious and immediate harm to the press sector, while the economic situation of publishers and news agencies is otherwise fragile, and while the law aimed on the contrary at improving the conditions of remuneration they derive from content produced by journalists,” the watchdog said in a statement.

Anyone indexing information or writing blog posts like this one should immediately stop pointing to content. It may have been a progressive act to burn the library in Alexandria. Monks at Mont St Michel? Wrong doers. No food and thorns under the cowl. And Google. Oh, Google will have its day in a French court. Hint: Bring a checkbook. Mais oui.

Great Moments in High School Science Club Management: Twitter and Zoom

Bird is a company with venture money renting scooters. One effect of scooteritis is the desire to throw scooters in ponds, dumpsters, and bushes.

A string of Tweets at this link report an example of the HSSCMM or high school science club management method. The technique is to use the Facebook friendly Zoom video conferencing app to hold a company meeting. (Why not have everyone move their Alexa close to the conference call too?)

Instead of a meeting Bird terminated with HSSCMM 400 employees. The happy news was provided by a pre-recorded Zoom message. Another Twitter service user insisted that the message was delivered by an allegedly human person who “started crying halfway through.”

Okay, Zoom. Firing lots of people. Nifty HSSCMM nevertheless. It will be interesting to see what the next “coming down to earth” high technology company can extend this method.

Efficiency when dealing with those NOT in the science club.

Semantic Sci-Fi: Search Is Great

I read “Keyword Search is DEAD; Semantic Search Is Smart.” I assume the folks at Medium consider each article, weigh its value, and then release only the highest value content.

Semantic search is better than any other type of search in the galaxy.

Let’s assume that the write up is correct and keyword search is dead. Further, we shall ignore the syntax of SQL queries, the dependence of policeware and intelware systems on users’ looking for named entities, and overlook the interaction of people using an automobile’s navigation service by saying, “Home.” These are examples of keyword search, and I decided to give a few examples, skipping how keyword search functions in desktop search, chemical structure systems, medical research, and good old, bandwidth trimming YouTube.

Okay, what’s the write up say beyond “keyword search is dead.”

Here are some points I extracted as I worked my way through the write up. I required more than three minutes (the Medium estimate) because my blood pressure was spiking, and I was hyper ventilating.

Factoid 1 from the write up :

If you do semantic search, you can get all information as per your intent.

What’s with this “all.” Content domains, no matter what the clueless believe, are incomplete. There is no “all” when it comes online information which is indexed.

Factoid 2 from the write up:

semantic search seeks to understand natural language the way a human would.

Yep, natural language queries are possible within certain types of content domains. However, the systems I have worked with and have an opportunity to use in controlled situations exhibit a number of persistent problems. These range from computational constraints. One system could support four simultaneous users on a corpus of fewer than 100,000 text documents. Others simply output “good enough” results. Not surprisingly when a physician needs an antitoxin to save a child’s life, keywords work better than “good enough” in my experience. NLP has been getting better, but the idea that systems can integrate widely different data which may be incomplete, incorrect, or stale and return a useful output is a big hurdle. So far no one has gotten over it on a consistent, affordable basis. Short cuts to reduce index look ups can be packaged as semantics and NLP but mostly these are clever ways to improve “efficiency.” Understanding sometimes. Precision and recall? Not yet.

IBM: A Leader in Following?

DarkCyber spotted “IBM Prepares To Advance Watson’s Language Ability.” The story appeared in Capital FM, an online publication in Nairobi. That’s okay. What’s interesting is that IBM has announced “the first commercialization of key Natural Language Processing (NLP) capabilities to come from IBM Research’s Project Debater, the only AI system capable of debating humans on complex topics.”

What’s new, aside from the Kenya coverage? Here’s a sampling of the technologies that will allegedly make Watson a superhero: Natural language processing. Watson will understand sentiment which can “identify and analyze idioms and colloquialisms for the first time.” [Emphasis added]

Plus:

IBM is bringing technology from IBM Research for understanding business documents, such as PDF’s and contracts, to also add to their AI models.

Where’s the technology originate? Project Debater. There’s also “deep learning based classification which

can learn from as few as several hundred samples to do new classifications quickly and easily. It will be added to Watson Discovery later this year.

Also, there’s another innovation:

It will also exploit natural language through Clustering or Advanced Topic Clustering. Building on insights gained from Project Debater, new topic clustering techniques will enable users to “cluster” incoming data to create meaningful “topics” of related information, which can then be analyzed.

Okay, let’s step back. NLP, quick deep learning, clustering, and the other technologies. My recollection is:

  • IBM’s Dharmendra Modha was writing about text clustering in “Large Scale Parallel Data Mining” which is about a decade after the Endeca crowd fired up their functional facets for “Guided Navigation”. Now this clustering is coming to IBM Watson. What?
  • In 2003 IBM researchers filed a patent application for “US7130777, Method to hierarchical pooling of opinions from multiple sources.” Now Watson is doing what commercial vendors have been offering for many years; for example, Lexalytics in 2003. Not exactly a text book case of using home grown technology or emulating a competitor, is it?
  • And NLP dates back to 1993 and the work of Vincent Stanford, Ora Williamson, Elton Sherwin, and Frank Castellucci. See US5615296. These are IBM professionals. And 1993 was more than a quarter century ago.

Net net: Kenya, Watson, and technologies that have been around for decades are part of IBM’s preparations to add functions to Watson. “Prepares”, year, pretty speedy.

Watson? What are you doing? Maybe DarkCyber should ask Alexa?

YouTube: About Findability or Futility

I am a librarian. My view is that YouTube search is not too good. When I was in library school, one of my professors used the technical term “stinks” when describing some retrieval systems. Maybe that term works in this post’s context?

Let’s try it out, “YouTube search stinks.” Would my former professor agree? I don’t know.

YouTube wants to improve its search function and Make Use Of reports on how, “Searching For The Right YouTube Channel Gets Easier With These 5 Sites.” It is difficult to find specific channels or even decent recommendations on YouTube, unless you know exactly what you are looking for. You can spend time mastering YouTube search or you can use Web sites that do the work for you.

The first useful tool is actually on the YouTube Web site. The YouTube Trends page update every fifteen minutes and highlights the most popular videos of the day. It is not catered for individuals, but it does show what is trending with other viewers. More specific categories can be selected showing what is popular in selected area.

Channels Stacks is another choice if you are searching for educational videos. YouTube has always been an excellent platform for free educational content. Alexander Olssen created Channel Stacks to curate educational content by topic. There are currently four categories: technology, creative, business, and lifestyle.

With the rise of streaming TV channel surfing should be a thing of the past, but organic discovery still exists on YouTube. If you do not know what to watch, check out Neverthink which does the task thinking for you. All one needs to do is select download the Neverthink app, pick a theme, and zone out. Neverthink curates videos based on the them, they will be good quality, and can lead you to a creator’s other work.

CreatorSpot is the new YouTubers best friend:

“CreatorSpot is quite like ProductHunt for creators on YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter. The site features eight new creators every day and that gives you a window to discover a fledgling YouTuber to follow. With thousands of videos uploaded every day, it’s difficult for a new content producer to come to everyone’s attention on platforms like YouTube. The platform relies on user submissions, to begin with. The creators are evaluated on quality, originality, attention, and frequency. Walnut TV literally combines YouTube and Reddit into one, which is great because Reddit’s search feature is a millions times better than YouTube. Walnut TV is exactly like Reddit with Subreddits, except everything is videos.

PocketTube is a subscription manager service that helps you organize your videos and channels. With PocketTube you can organize subscriptions into groups, personalize them with icons, and change the layout. This makes it easier to search, add, and delete videos.

YouTube may not conform to my professor’s definition of “stinks,” but the online ad giant has an opportunity to improve. YouTube may deliver futility, not findability.
