Whither Oracle SES10g

September 26, 2008

Oracle sent me summaries of the daily news announcements from its Oracleworld held earlier this week of September 22, 2008. You can find most of these announcements on the Oracle Web site here. I scanned the summaries Oracle emailed me and noticed a curiosity. There were no references to Oracle’s enterprise search system SES10g (Secure Enterprise Search). In May 2007, the SES10g unit gave a lunch talk punctuated with hints of a resurgence of Oracle in this market. Based on the announcements I have seen, SES10g seems to be playing a lesser role. Enterprise search is a tough market, and it takes more than a strong security model to win deals against the fierce competitors prowling this sector. Maybe SES10g is on life support? Could Oracle be shopping for an alternative? What are your thoughts?

Oracle SES is alive and well and Oracle is actively engaged with its channel partners like Apps Associates who can guide their clients through staging and implementation of enterprise search where security is only one of the special considerations. As an example of this partnership, you can listen to the podcast recorded by Oracle and Apps Associates at Open World this year about how Oracle works with partners in enabling them to use SES within their own applications. This podcast can be accessed at the following link: http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/OracleDatabaseInsider/~3/402926508/6980515_Siemens_092408.mp3.

In brief, by making it easy to embed SES within other applications and by working actively with its partners Oracle SES is extending its reach to new markets and customers. Besides this, the SES product is continually being enhanced to integrate with many more enterprise systems as well as include new features that distinguish it from other enterprise search products in the market.

This is useful information. I still don’t recall seeing much presence for SES10g at the Oracle show. I don’t think the information you provided in your post made it to the press email Oracle sent me. So, I think your information is helpful, but it doesn’t address the low profile SES10g presented to me when I wrote the post about the Oracle get together. Also, I keep hearing that Oracle or at least one unit of Oracle is a Google partner. If SES10g was hitting home runs, is it really true Oracle is selling a competitive product in lieu of SES10g. I just find that hard to believe if it is indeed true.
