The Importance of Your Online Presence During the Hiring Process

May 10, 2013

An article on Executive Career Brand titled Social Proof: Where Online Presence Meets Personal Branding explains the distinct importance of your social media presence during the hiring process. We’ve all read articles about removing Facebook photos of nights out partying with friends, but this story argues that hiding your online-self from potential employees could be equally as devastating to your chance of getting the job you applied for. The article states,

“Did you know that an estimated 90% of employers used social networks and social media – known as social recruiting – to find, assess and validate talent in 2012? Executive recruiters and hiring decision makers seek “social proof” to confirm you are who you say you are, and to learn more about you. Social proof – your social media activity and the information that resides online about you – is a personal marketing strategy”

Whether you are shy, private or apathetic to social media, there is really no escaping its significance to your career. One reason mentioned for the added standing of information found online on LinkedIn or another social media site is that you are more likely to be honest about your accomplishments when the entire world can see what you are saying about yourself, as opposed to a paper copy of a resume that you hand in during an interview. If you take anything from this article, it’s that you can now expect to be Googled during the hiring process.

Enterprise Portal Shoots for Back End Integration at Lower Cost

May 9, 2013

New Liferay adapters will be available in Q3 2013 that they hope will bring more affordability to back-end integration. Liferay’s services hinge on the portal model, bringing a marketplace to enterprises where users can choose various enterprise pieces that work together to create a customized solution. Read more about the latest partnership in the CMS Wire article, “Enterprise Portal Liferay Partners with TIBCO Software for Lower Cost Back-End Integration.”

The article touts the merits of such strategic partnerships:

“When two ecosystems get together, the result can be a bigger landscape. This week, enterprise portal vendor Liferay announced a new partnership with infrastructure provider TIBCO Software that is intended to simplify Liferay Portal’s integration with SAP, SharePoint, JD Edwards, Peoplesoft, Lotus Notes, Siebel and other systems. Via the partnership, customers can have a portal-based application that connects through TIBCO’s ActiveMatrix BusinessWorks platform to backend systems.”

Portal integration is important, particularly for this style of service. However, for some smaller organizations, an out-of-the-box solution might be best, particularly for those who are exploring an enterprise search solution for the first time. For these organizations, LucidWorks might be worth exploring. LucidWorks is built on the open source strength of Apache Lucene/Solr and is ready to go out-of-the-box. Specializing in Big Data or traditional enterprise search, LucidWorks’ power is in its award-winning customer service and support.

How To Formulate A Strategy For Social Media Marketing That Works

May 9, 2013

In the article 5 Questions to Ask Before Implementing a Social Media Strategy on Social Media Today, guidelines are presented for pursuing a new social media strategy. These include defining your goals (short term and long term) discovering whether these goals can be accomplished with one strategy or several, creating a step by step outline determining what you will do every day to reach your goals, asking yourself throughout the process whether your strategy needs adjusting, and having a workable timelines in place. The article explains,

“Everyone’s strategy development is different, but the overarching themes can be applicable to all. Oh yeah, and strategy (since I see it everywhere and no real description attached) is the high level plan(s) that’s built to achieve certain, pre-determined goals. Tactics are the executional steps that help achieve the overarching goals of the strategy… There needs to a be a concise list of short term, immediate goals you want to knock out”

One aspect of this guide that the article dwells on is the value of recognizing the difference between what you want to have happen and what is actually possible in reality. In other words- know thyself. Don’t get distracted by the complexities of a big project, make detailed plans and stay organized to keep disciplined. This summary is expanded on with more details at ArnoldIT, where the confusing new world of social media is elucidated.

Written in Ink: Considerations for Students When It Comes To Their Digital Selves

May 9, 2013

The story titled Understanding Your Digital Footprint on the Digital Literacy blog highlights the dangers and consequences of using social media. Sherry Turkle, the Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology in the Program in Science, Technology, and Society at MIT, is shown giving a Ted Talk on the addiction to technology that our society has collectively embraced. At one point she explains the reliance on social media with these words, “I share, therefore I am.” The article considers a potential roadmap for students to use to think about their social media use,

“There is a line in the Aaron Sorkin film, The Social Network, that highlights the importance of what we post digitally. “The internet is not written in pencil, Mark, it’s written in ink.” Objective: Create an image or images that represent your digital identity. Tell your digital story. Guiding questions: Consider your engagement with social media. How would you define your digital self? What characterizes you online? How would Employers or College Admissions officers define your digital self?”

Perhaps seriously considering that others may see everything and anything you share will help stymie some less classy posts. Another video on the blog acts as a fable of the possible consequences of sharing. A young man takes a video of himself, forgets it, and realizes years later that it has been seen by over a million people, and defines his digital presence. At ArnoldIT the traces of one’s digital footprint is of the utmost concern, especially since so many of us are unaware of the risks.

A Fresh Look at Big Data

May 8, 2013

Next week I am doing an invited talk in London. My subject is search and Big Data. I will be digging into this notion in this month’s Honk newsletter and adding some business intelligence related comments at an Information Today conference in New York later this month. (I have chopped the number of talks I am giving this year because at my age air travel and the number of 20 somethings at certain programs makes me jumpy.)

I want to highlight one point in my upcoming London talk; namely, the financial challenge which companies face when they embrace Big Data and then want to search the information in the system and search the Big Data system’s outputs.

Here are the simplified curves:

image

Notice that precision and recall has not improved significantly over the last 30 years. I anticipate that many search vendors will tell me that their systems deliver excellent precision and recall. I am not convinced. The data which I have reviewed show that over a period of 10 years most systems hit the 80 to 85 percent precision and recall level for content which is about a topic. Content collections composed of scientific, technical, and medical information where the terminology is reasonably constrained can do better. I have seen scores above 90 percent. However, for general collections, precision and recall has not been improving relative to the advances in other disciplines; for example, converting structured data outputs to fancy graphics.

Social Media: Changing Marketing From the Inside Out

May 8, 2013

The article 6 Factors That Turn Social Media Strategy Into Results on {grow} is full of tips and advice on how to not only implement a social media strategy but also how to even approach such a transformation in your business. Beginning with the warning that this is unlike traditional advertising, in that you can’t relegate to an outside source, but must instead promote internal change, the article goes on to describe the pitfalls of doing social media the wrong way, such as changing directions before you given the new strategy time to yield results. The article also insists on measurement being united with objectives,

“Repeat after me. “I will measure my marketing efforts.” In today’s data-filled world, there is no reason NOT to measure. It’s just this simple: How do you know your strategy is working if you don’t measure? Don’t get caught up in the endless ROI debate. Pick meaningful KPI’s that are helping to move the needle for your business objectives. “

Because of the ubiquity of blogs and Facebook pages, the article argues that without such tools you are already behind. Also addressing the heads of companies, the article instructs leaders to support the implementation with a hands-on approach, the only way to know what resources to provide out of necessity. The successful implementation of social media strategy is vital in this day and age; it is the only way to reach certain targeted audiences. More about effective approaches to social media strategies can be found at ArnoldIT.

Because Tweets Are Not Always the Truth

May 8, 2013

Can emerging technologies aid in filtering out the untrusted and unverified chattering of the masses? Using the recent Boston Marathon bombings as an example where this kind of technology would be useful, the MIT Technology Review article “Preventing Misinformation from Spreading through Social Media” explains some possible solutions on their radar.

When people play detective on Reddit and other social media sites with the goal of sharing information quickly as opposed to ensuring accuracy, false accusations can be made – such as the case with Sunil Tripathi. Researchers from Masdar Institute of Technology and the Qatar Computing Research Institute plan to launch Verily as a platform that could combat situations like that one.

The article states:

“Verily aims to enlist people in collecting and analyzing evidence to confirm or debunk reports. As an incentive, it will award reputation points—or dings—to its contributors. Verily will join services like Storyful that use various manual and technical means to fact-check viral information, and apps such as Swift River that, among other things, let people set up filters on social media to provide more weight to trusted users in the torrent of posts following major events.”

This will be an interesting sector to watch as there is a growing awareness of social media’s distortional lever.
