Improvement to SharePoint Records Management

April 4, 2014

Early iterations of SharePoint records management were fraught with shortcomings. But the word has come that SharePoint 2013 offers an improvement on the failings of the past. Read more in the Search Content Management story, “SharePoint Records Management Spans New Forms of Content.”

The article begins:

“In prior releases, SharePoint records management was functional but nothing to write home about. But with SharePoint 2013, it’s time to get excited. The trends of mobile computing, social media in the enterprise, the cloud, and global search have converged and touched just about every business process that depends on IT. Records management is no exception.”

Stephen E. Arnold is a longtime leader in search and offers up his analysis and opinions on his Web site ArnoldIT.com. SharePoint gets a lot of coverage due to its prominence in the market. But, Arnold consistently finds that the huge platform of SharePoint lags behind the smaller more agile offerings on the market. Only time will tell if the improvements in mobile, social, and records management will increase the overall functionality and user experience of the product.

April 3, 2014

The release titled Spotter Goes Live in Doha with Qatar National Sport Day! on Spotter News explains the excitement surrounding Spotter and Mediatree’s contribution to Qatar’s event. Spotter is a media and social analytics company. The article notes that this marks the first occasion of a Middle Eastern event being covered in real time on the Live Dashboard of Spotter’s app Spotterpulse. This will be useful for event organizers in particular, who can monitor Arabic and English Twitter conversations in real time. The article expands,

“Before, during and after the event, all interested parties can access the platform to view the 4 Dashboards – “Timeline”, “Engagement”, “Organisations”, “Influencers” – and get the answers to the following questions: What is the global visibility of the event? How does the visibility evolve during the event day? What is the level of engagement of the population in Qatar? and abroad? What sports, locations and organisations gain the highest level of interest?”

Being able to compile data and learn from it will ensure an ability to improve any event. CEO of Spotter Ana Athayde stressed that all different types of events could benefit from Spotter’s technology from Sports to Business to TV and Cinema Festivals. The Spotterpulse platform allows the event organizers to gain a better understanding of the success of an event.

Meet The Armadillo

April 3, 2014

Armadillos are not native to France, but the Armadillo digital resources management company is. If you are curious to learn more about the French company peruse the “Company Overview” with a little assistance from Google Translate. Armadillo was founded in 1998 and has since acquired a very long and prestigious client list.

Armadillo’s products offer a range of services that include research and development of information technology, custom data solutions, and packages for various digital content. The products are, of course, advertised as a big data solution and can be customized for any data type, content, and organizational method.

The director describes his products as:

“Armadillo packages are integrated into the information systems of companies and other organizations to facilitate data exchange between former silos. This creates repositories harmonized content easily shared and guaranteed “up to date “. Our solutions have a broad functional coverage with excellent performance for near-zero operating costs. Our technology is based on the latest innovations proposed by the Semantic Web and Big Data.”

It looks like another big data player peddling the usual solutions, however, they have been around longer than other big data startups, so longevity and reliability is on their side.

Open Source Search Gets Confusing

April 3, 2014

Elasticsearch is the favored open source search application and many startups have built their own products on top of the platform, increasing competition among the startups. InfoWorld lets us know that the competition is about to get stiffer in the article, “Logstash Steps Up As Splunk’s Latest Challenger.”

Splunk offers many big data solutions, including security, analytics, application management, and cloud services. The article explains that Logstash is part of a components stack also including Kibaba and Elasticsearch. It is used to log data and can be configured to a user’s needs. It is an Apache-licensed open source endeavor and has a lower cost margin (either free or a different pay for support plans). Elasticsearch has commercialized Logstash through its Marvel product.

It does not appear that Logstash is a direct competitor, but the article explains:

“So far, the biggest distinction between Splunk and its competition is how they’re productized. Splunk’s a proprietary item, but with the emphasis on it being a product and not simply a technology stack. The competition still largely consists of open source stacks rather than actual services, but it’s clear the gap between what Splunk offers at a cost and what others offer for free is closing.”

Another new service pressures Lucid Imagination and other search vendors to create a response, which also makes investors inpatient as Elasticsearch surges forward with bigger and better ideas. Search vendors are lost in the middle as they try to be competitive and earn a profit at the same time. Kudos to Elasticsearch and open source applications.

SharePoint Best of Breed Organizations Named

April 3, 2014

Focusing on SharePoint organizations worldwide that focus on solving unstructured and semi-structured problems by leveraging SharePoint, the Best of Breed Showcase Initiative recently recognized some winners. The PR Web article, “Concept Searching Clients Represent SharePoint Best of Breed Organizations,” highlights the details:

Concept Searching, the global leader in semantic metadata generation, auto-classification, taxonomy management software, and developer of the Smart Content Framework, is honored that two of its clients, Nottinghamshire County Council and West Sussex County Council, were participants in the Metalogix Best of Breed Showcase initiative, which culminated at the recent SharePoint Conference 2014.”

Stephen E. Arnold is a longtime search expert, and gives a lot of attention to SharePoint on his Web site, ArnoldIT.com. He also tries to find the best SharePoint add-ons that improve the overall user experience. While SharePoint is still the market leader in terms of adoptees, it is still a large and unwieldy platform that needs a lot of customization to make it functional. Effective add-ons can improve that process.

HP and Its Business Direction

April 2, 2014

I read “HP Agrees to Pay $57 Million to Settle Shareholder Lawsuit,” a Reuters’ story. I wonder, “Is this an April Fool’s joke?” Maybe.

The “real journalist” write up reports that HP has to pay lots of money for refocusing “the company on business services and products.” Okay, I remember that. Part of that effort was the purchase of Autonomy for $10 or $11 billion.

Here the passage I noted:

In the midst of a multi-year turnaround effort intended to revive growth, HP is trying to reduce its reliance on personal computers and move toward computing equipment and networking gear for enterprises.

The problem is that either the “real journalist”, HP, or gremlins see HP without the cloud, Autonomy as a service, and other voodoo HP was working on.

When HP is at the controls, I am never sure where the farm tractor will go. When “real journalists” explain a company, I want to make sure I am not in the hemp field.

A Search Engine for Similar Web Sites

April 2, 2014

How many times have you searched Google or DuckDuckGo and wanted to find a Web site similar to one you had already found? Instead of sifting through the search results, a new startup in Berlin has come up with a new and useful concept. Called Similarsitecheck, the startup is a free search engine that that finds similar and related Web sites.

Similarsitecheck works by:

“In order to find similar websites for a given domain Similarsitecheck analyzes the entire content as well as external links for the webpage. During the analysis we collect the most important keywords and phrases for a webpage. To actually calculate the alternative websites we search for the found keywords and phrases in our database, compare the sites and get a similarity score for the domains.”

After doing a practice search with www.att.com, we were given alternative phone and Internet companies, including local att.com providers. When we searched for www.ArnoldIT.com, the results were cluttered with Web sites that were similar in theme, but not legitimate. The algorithm needs more tweaking, but the idea is sound.

OpenCalais Has Big Profile Users

April 2, 2014

OpenCalais is an open source project that creates rich semantic data by using natural language processing and other analytical methods through a Web service interface. It is a simple explanation for a piece of powerful software. OpenCalais was originally part of ClearForest, but Thomson Reuters acquired the project in 2007. Instead of marketing OpenCalais as proprietary software, Reuters allowed it to remain open. OpenCalais has since become valued metadata open source software that is used on blogs to specialized museum collections.

There are many notables who use OpenCalais and a sample can be found on “The List Of OpenCalais Implementations Grows.”

OpenCalais is excited about the new additions to the list:

“Add 10 to the list of innovative sites and services that use OpenCalais to reduce costs, deliver compelling content experiences and mine the social web for insight. See our press release for more details on each. We are thrilled to recognize the following new sites and services that are changing the way we engage with news and the social Web. They join a growing number of others in media, publishing, blogging, and news aggregation who use OpenCalais.”

Among them are The New Republic, Al Jazeera’s English blogging news networks, Slate Magazine’s blogging network, and I*heart* Sea.” Not only do news Web sites use OpenCalais, but news aggregation apps do as well, including, Feedly. DocumentCloud, and OpenPublish. Expect the list to grow even longer and consider OpenCalais for your own metadata solution.

Taken in by Data Mining and Transfinancial Economics

April 2, 2014

Have you ever heard of transfinancial economics? It is a concept originated by Robert Searle and he writes about the topic and other related concepts on his blog The Economic Realms. Searle explains that:

“[Transfinancial economics] believes that apart from earned money, new unearned money could be electronically created without serious inflation notably for key climate change/ environmentally sustainable projects, and for high ethical/ social “enterprises.” “

It is a possible theory that could be explored, but while investigating Searle’s blog posts and his user profile it comes to light that Searle is either an extremely longwinded person or he is a dummy SEO profile. While trying to study his reasoning for transfinancial economics, he wrote a blog post that explains how data mining will be important to it.

He then copied the entire Wikipedia entry on data mining. Browsing through his other posts, he has copied other Wikipedia entries among a few original entries. If Searle is a real person, his blog follows a Pat Gunkel-esque writing style. He spins his ideas to connect to each other from his transfinancial economics to improvisation whistling. If you have time, you work through the entire blog for an analysis of the discipline and how transfinancial economics works. We doubt that Searle will be writing a book on the topic soon.

Documentation Toolkit for SharePoint

April 2, 2014

Documentation Toolkit for SharePoint 4.0 was released this week by Acceleratio Ltd. SharePoint 2007 is supported and new best practices and features were added. Read all the details in the PRWeb release, “Documentation Toolkit for SharePoint 4.0 – New SharePoint Best Practices, Enhanced Permissions Reports and Completely New Interface Design.”

The release says:

“Acceleratio Ltd., an innovative software development company, released a new version of Documentation Toolkit for SharePoint. Version 4.0 comes with improved Permissions Reports, a redesigned interface and an improved compare wizard. New Best Practices were added for more efficient analysis of the SharePoint farm configuration.“

Stephen E. Arnold of ArnoldIT.com has made a name for himself following and analyzing all things search, including SharePoint. But one thing is certain from the coverage; SharePoint gets more powerful and more complicated all at the same time. This opens a wide space for add-ons and value-added software that improve the user experience and customization of SharePoint without adding a lot of hassle.
